HostableHostable

Small VPS: RAM, swap, disk

Fit a game server on a cheap machine and keep the disk from filling up.

Check before you install

sudo hostable preflight palworld --memory-mb 8192

It reports RAM, swap, free disk and the servers already running, and warns when:

  • the game wants more memory than the machine has (RAM plus swap),
  • another running server plus this one would not fit in RAM,
  • there is no swap at all,
  • the disk is too small (this one blocks creation).

Swap

Swap is slow, but it turns a sudden out-of-memory kill into a slowdown. A few GB is a good safety net on an 8 GB machine.

sudo hostable swap 4096

Creates /swapfile, enables it and adds it to /etc/fstab. It does nothing if swap is already on.

One heavy server at a time

Two modded Minecraft servers, or Palworld plus anything big, will not fit in 8 GB. Hostable warns, and each game's service has a raised OOM score so the kernel sacrifices a game before it sacrifices sshd or the daemon.

Disk

sudo hostable disk

Lists the biggest things, largest first: journald, apt caches, backups per server, folders in /srv/hostable/servers that no server uses, and large folders under /home (old server copies, world backups). Only the safe items can be cleaned by Hostable:

sudo hostable disk --clean journal # trims logs to 200 MB
sudo hostable disk --clean apt # clears downloaded packages

Everything else is reported and left for you to delete by hand.
